Lata Mangeshkar: Security beefed outside Pedder Road residence, Shivaji Park; preps for cremation under way

Political bigwigs, including Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, will attend Lata Mangeshkar’s funeral, which will happen in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park in the evening, today. Mangeshkar’s family members have already reached the venue, and from celebrities to common people — people are showing up in large numbers to pay their last respects to the legendary singer. Around 2,000 sq ft of the park’s area has been barricaded for the cremation proceedings. Bollywood superstar, Shah Rukh Khan, has also arrived at Shivaji Park to pay his last respects to Lata Mangeshkar.

The veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar’s mortal remains, wrapped in the national flag, has been brought to Shivaji Park for the last rites and the funeral is slated to begin soon.

Considering the brisk movement of VIPs at her residence, police officials confirmed that the security has been beefed up along Pedder Road in South Mumbai. Security arrangements have also strengthened at Shivaji Park and the vicinity. The area has been barricaded to ensure a smooth movement of vehicles.

Earlier today, defence forces and police gave a guard of honour to the singer whose mortal remains were kept outside her residence.

Following the demise of the legend, the country will observe two-day national mourning. It has been reported that the national flag will fly at half-mast.

The late singer’s house is witnessing a massive police deployment. With Covid-19 still looming large, the police are attempting to vacate the surrounding areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in attendance at Shivaji Park to take part in the last rites of the acclaimed melody queen. “Will be leaving for Mumbai in some time to pay my last respects to Lata Didi,” PM tweeted.

Ever since the news broke, fans have been thronging the timeless singer’s residence. Politicians, celebrities, musicians, and thousands of others took to social media to express their grief after the demise of the singer. Many Bollywood celebrities and musicians were seen sharing anecdotes about the life and time of Lata Mangeshkar.

Lata Mangeshkar, 92, passed away on Sunday morning after battling pneumonia, Covid-19, and several other age-related issues. Although it was reported that the singer recovered from Covid-19, she was kept on ventilator support on Saturday. Her condition worsened later.

The singer will be created with full state honours in Shivaji Park, Mumbai on Sunday evening.
