Volkswagen Atlas SUVs recalled in US, Canada to address airbags, windows and brakes issues

BSH NEWS

Volkswagen AG has issued a recall notice for 246,000 units of Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs manufactured in the US and Canada for a possible wiring flaw that may affect the functioning of airbags, brakes and windows of the vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report stated that the faulty electrical wiring might lead to airbags deploying way faster “than they are designed to”. It is highly likely to injure passengers on board the VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs.

Moreover, the wiring may also affect other vehicle components such as self-rolling down of windows and, the most critical, the application of brakes while driving slowly.

Although there is no repair mechanism in place to rectify the wiring issue with Volkswagen, the automaker will run a reimbursement program for the vehicles recalled.

The Volkswagen recall will affect the recent models of the Atlas from 2019 to 2023 and 2020 to 2023 of the Atlas Cross Sport.

How will the company notify car owners?

The German automaker will be sending out recall emails to its select Atlas customers who have their cars manufactured between 2019 and 2023. It will be emailing the owners by May 10, 2022. As the carmaker does not have a solution at present, it will connect with the customers of the SUV once they have a solution in place to repair the affected wiring of the vehicle.

How to check whether your Volkswagen Atlas falls under the recall?

VW Atlas owners can go to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website and key in their Vehicle Identification Number or VIN to know whether their SUV is included in the recall.

Last month, VW Group companies – Audi and Porsche – recalled 32,000 cars. The second recall affected 1,242 Porsches and 31,058 Audis.
