Texas authorities warn of more dangerous fire season ahead as wildfire victim’s family mourns her passing

Barbara Fenley, a deputy sergeant, is said to have died while assisting residents of the Eastland neighborhood in evacuating from the recent disastrous wildfires in West Texas. As per the Sheriff’s office reports, she ran off the road and was killed in flames due to deteriorating circumstances and reduced visibility caused by smoke.

According to the Sheriff’s office, Fenley, a 51-year older woman, began her law enforcement career as a patrol officer in 2003. She was subsequently named Gorman Chief of Police in January 2007 before becoming an Eastland deputy in 2013. Her spouse and three children are the ones she leaves behind.

According to the National Weather Service, low humidity and gusty winds have generated a prolonged elevated fire risk in the region west of I-35, as three wildfires developed within 100 miles west of Fort Worth on Friday.

The Eastland Complex Fire had burnt 70.9 square miles by Friday afternoon. According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, the fire had burned nearly 45,000 acres and was 15% contained as of Saturday afternoon. Authorities estimate that the fires have destroyed at least 50 homes, and over 475 homes have been evacuated.

Forecast Predictions

According to a Saturday update on the national Inciweb wildfire management system, Sunday will be another risky fire weather day, with a fire weather watch planned to begin Sunday morning and last until the evening hours.

According to forecasts, relative humidity levels will drop once more, but conditions will be much warmer and windier than they are now. There is also a chance that rapid-fire will happen again on Sunday afternoon/evening.

The Texas Department of Emergency Management advised residents to stay weather-aware and practice wildfire safety, especially in areas where burn prohibitions are in effect. The department has made fire safety resources available.
