Maharashtra puts administration on alert as global cases rise

Maharashtra government on Thursday alerted the state administration on suspicion of a possible new variant fuelling COVID infections in Israel, South Korea, Germany and other countries.

In a letter to district collectors, municipal commissioners and CEOs of Zilla Parishads – Pradeep Vyas, additional chief secretary asked the administration to ensure avoidance of crowds, appropriate masking, stepping up surveillance, and pushing vaccination against COVID for eligible people.

“Some new variant is suspected to be fuelling infections in Israel and other countries. With all restrictions almost relaxed in our state we need to be alert,” Vyas said.

“Though at present we are quite comfortable with only around 2000 active COVID cases, but situation may dramatically change over the next few weeks,” Vyas added.

Covid cases are surging in countries such as South Korea that reporeted 6.21 lakh new cases in a day and Germany reported 2.62 lakh cases, UK saw 94,000 cases in last 24 hours.
