Sarpanch Shabir Ahmad Mir was rushed to the nearby hospital where he was declared dead by doctors.
This is the second incident in two days when a Panchayat member has been killed in the Kashmir Valley (Representational)
Terrorists opened fire on a village chief, or sarpanch, in Kulgam’s Okey village in south Kashmir today. Sarpanch Shabir Ahmad Mir was immediately taken to a hospital in Kulgam, where he was declared dead by doctors.
This is the second incident in two days when a Panchayat member has been killed in the Kashmir Valley.
“Strongly condemn yet another barbaric and cowardly act where another public representative and the grassroots worker Shabir Ahmed Mir was killed at Odoura, in Kulgam district of South Kashmir. It’s an attack on democracy and such attacks won’t be tolerated. Pertinently, Shabir wasn’t affiliated with the BJP as is being reported by a section of the media,” J&K BJP spokesman Altaf Thakur said.
Shabir Ahmad Mir’s wife, Nusrat, is also a sarpanch.
The Valley has been seeing a spike in terror incidents recently.
On March 9, terrorists shot and killed another sarpanch, Sameer Ahmad Bhat, in the outskirts of Srinagar. On March 2, an Independent sarpanch was killed in Kulgam.
