G23 members demand new Congress chief, seek emergency AICC meeting

G23 members have demanded a new Congress president “as soon as possible”. They have asked for speeding-up the electoral process for the same.

Congress’s loss of power in the Assembly polls has led to calls for reform within the party.

‘G23’, or the group of 23 dissenters, have asked to call for an emergency AICC meeting, saying that the responsibility for the recent poll debacle needs to be fixed.

According to the reports, the target is the composition of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), accountability for the recent poll debacle, and the completion of organisational polls.

Meanwhile, party MPs Kapil Sibbal and Manish Tiwari Manish Tewari held a meeting at former leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad’s house on Friday. According to sources, they discussed the party’s poor performance and future strategy.

The Congress was thoroughly outclassed by the AAP in Punjab Assembly polls and managed to bag only 18 seats, a reversal from the 77 seats it won in the 2017 Punjab Assembly polls and formed the government.
