Naseeruddin Shah reveals that he suffers from Onomatomanic, an abnormal obsession with words

Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah revealed that he suffers from onomatomania, a condition where a person fixates on certain words or phrases and keeps using them repeatedly. The veteran star said that this condition of obsessing with a particular word does not let him rest or even sleep.

Shah was speaking to a YouTube channel about his condition.

“I suffer from an ailment called onomatomania. I’m not joking. It’s a medical condition. You can check it in the dictionary,” he said.

The 71-year-old then explained the condition. “Onomatomania is an ailment in which you keep repeating a word or a phrase, a sentence or a verse or a speech for no reason at all. Except that you like to hear it. I do it all the time so I am never quite at rest. Even when I am sleeping, I am going over some passage I love,” he told YouTube channel
Chalchitra Talks.

Onomatomania is often liked with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and was coined by Jean-Martin Charcot, who is regarded as the “father of modern neurology”, and French psychiatrist Valentin Magnan for patients who were disabled by “imperative ideas”.

In the same interview, Shah also talked about his actress-wife Ratna Pathak Shah, saying that they recommend books to each other but don’t really follow through with it.

Meanwhile, on work front, Shah was last seen in the Deepika Padukone-starrer ‘Gehraiyaan’ by film-maker Shakun Batra where he played the role of the actress’s father.

He was also seen in the comedy web series ‘Kaun Banega Shikharwati’ which starred Soha Ali Khan, Lara Dutta and Kritika Kamra in which he played the role of a debt-ridden king.
