Ambika Sahu (20), a first-year student at the Kharkiv National Medical University, has been surviving on three spoons of pasta that has to be shared between two people. Sahu is stranded at the basement cum bunker of Hostel No.4 of the University along with 400 other Indian students.
“There are 2,000 students in several of these basements, of whom around 400 are Indian students. The kitchen is open only for an hour in the afternoon and we are served two to three spoons of pasta that has to be shared on a plate between two people. We have been stranded here since the last six days and water is scarce,” said Ambika Sahu.
Ambika said this is the same university that Naveen Gyanagoudar was studying in. Naveen was killed after he stepped out to buy groceries as the food in their bunker had run out.
Ambika told ET that they keep hearing firing and bombs falling 1.5 km from their hostel. “It is terrifying. Some step out to get supplies but we don’t as we hear firing and bombs falling,” said Ambika. Ambika hails from Jharkhand. Her brother Amardeep said, “The situation is getting quite bad there for the Indian students and if the Indian government speaks to the Russian government then it would take just two hours for the students to leave from Kharkiv and reach Belgorod airport in Russia.”
