NEW DELHI: Congress and the Left parties on Monday accused the government of being oblivious to the gathering emergency in Ukraine while other countries were preparing evacuation plans and alleged that it is now indulging in “propaganda and photo-ops” by using grand slogans like ‘Operation Ganga’ to hide the failures.
While the Left parties welcomed the decision to deploy a ministerial delegation to some European countries, CPM said the government had ample time to evacuate Indians but failed to act because it was too busy with “propaganda, spin and photo-ops”.
Congress accused the government of responding late to the situation. Tagging a video of students facing harsh action by the cops at the Ukraine border, Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “My heart goes out to the Indian students suffering such violence and their family watching these videos. The GOI must urgently share the detailed evacuation plan with those stranded as well as their families. We can’t abandon our own people.”
CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said, “Modi govt had sufficient lead time to evacuate Indians. Instead focus is on propaganda, spin and photo ops.”
Meanwhile, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday extended her “unconditional support” to PM Modi on the Ukraine crisis and suggested an all-party meeting “to consolidate our national resolve to come out of the crisis with our head held high”. She said that “in times of grave international crisis, we should keep aside our domestic disagreements to stand united as a nation”.
