Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday enumerated the measures taken by his government for the welfare of women including banning instant triple talaq, which, he said, has led to a fall of 80% in such cases since the law was passed.
Ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, the prime minister in his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address said women were contributing to the country’s growth from panchayat to Parliament.
“A social evil like (instant) triple talaq is also coming to an end. Ever since the law against it has come into force, there has been a reduction of 80% in (instant) triple talaq cases. How are all these changes happening in such a short span of time? This change is happening because women themselves are leading the change,” Modi said.
His remarks came at a time when the hijab controversy in Karnataka has stirred heated debates on the issue. Though the prime minister did not touch upon the issue, he emphasised the importance of girls going to school.
“The number of girls going to school has improved. In this we also have a responsibility that our daughters do not drop out of school,” he said.
“You must be noticing another major change happening in the country. This change is the success of our social campaigns. Take the success of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’… Today, the sex ratio in the country has improved,” the PM said.
“Today, in our country, from Parliament to panchayat, women are reaching new heights in different fields. In the Army too, daughters are now taking new and important responsibilities and roles in protecting the country. Last month on Republic Day, we saw our daughters flying modern fighter planes. The country has also lifted the restriction on admission of daughters in Sainik Schools and they are joining them all over the country,” Modi said.
The PM said even in the fast-growing world of start-ups, women are playing an important role.
