The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has questioned Anand Subramanian, former NSE group operating officer, in Chennai for the past three days, said people in the know.
The questioning pertained to the agency’s ongoing probe on the emails unearthed by Sebi between former NSE chief executive officer and managing director (CEO and MD) Chitra Ramkrishna, and an unidentified individual referred to as “Yogi“.
The federal agency last week had expanded its ambit of probe in the NSE co-location case registered by it in 2018. The agency had also issued a look out circular (LoC) against Chitra Ramkrishna, Anand Subramanian, the then group operating officer and adviser to the managing director and former MD &CEO Ravi Narain. An LoC prohibits travel outside the country.
It might be clarified here that Chitra is not named as an accused in the FIR registered by the CBI in May 2018. However, one of the co-accused booked in the FIR are “unknown officers/officials of Sebi and NSE, Mumbai”.
The said FIR is registered on charges of criminal conspiracy, destruction of document or electronic record to prevent its production as evidence. Other charges include “attempt to give, receive bribes, misuse of official position and destroying evidences”, under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Besides, the Information Technology (IT) Act also stands invoked in the said FIR.
Besides, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also likely to be roped in to investigate stashing of funds in tax havens, if any.
Sources added that the agency is probing if the information shared with a private person, ‘a Yogi’ as claimed by her was for any pecuniary benefit.
Meanwhile the income tax department which had carried out searches last Thursday is likely to share its findings with the CBI if its investigation reveals that Ramkrishna misused her office as the MD and CEO of NSE.
